Original Crate Furniture Construction

In general, furniture frames are constructed from ash, side panels from mdf or ply and base panels from hardwood plywood. Drawer sides are made from ash or poplar with a solid plywood base.

All of our furniture, including our colourful crates, is constructed using traditional joinery. You don't have to bolt anything together.

For all but the smallest drawers, and unless specified in the description of the piece, we use full extension, undermounted runners. You can't easily see them and you can pull the drawer all the way out.

We use concealed hinges in cabinet doors, unless specified or obvious in the photographs of the cabinet.

Large pieces have adjustable feet.

Crate hardware is different and configurable and is discussed in the 'Crate Options' section

The finish on painted furniture and crates comprises 2 coats of good quality, water based primer/sealer, followed by 2 - 4 coats of water based top coat, depending on colour. Hand sanding between each coat ensures a super smooth finish. We use Little Greene paint, generally their Intelligent Eggshell. We have a palette of 20 favourite colours, but the paint is mixed locally so you can choose anything you like from their Intelligent Eggshell range.

Wooden furniture may be lacquered or oiled, with a wax finish. This will be specified in the description of the piece.

Wooden Crate Tray Inserts are always oiled and waxed so it is easier to maintain them when they take a battering from toys etc.
